47 Chandos Place, London, WC2N 4HS
This pub crawl takes us to some of the best pubs just to the south of Covent Garden, starting at The Harp – http://www.harpcoventgarden.com. Although now owned by Fuller’s, it is still run more like a Free House with up to 10 hand-pumps in use at any one time. The nearest underground stations are Charing Cross and Leicester Square.
The plan is to move on to The Nell Gwynne, 1-2 Bull Inn Court, WC2R 0NP – http://www.thenellgwynne.com – at around 8.45 and then the Porterhouse, 21-22 Maiden Lane, WC2E 7NA – http://www.theporterhouse.ie/bars-london-coventgarden.php – at around 10.00.
The Nell Gwynne, named after the famous fruit-seller, actress and close companion of Charles II, is the type of traditional pub that is now very rare indeed this close to the centre of London.
The Porterhouse is the London outpost of Dublin’s Porterhouse Brewing Company. It also happens to be the largest pub in London, with 12 different levels, and there’s usually live music in the basement.
All of the pubs have outside areas of one kind or another, so that’s where we’ll be if the weather’s fine. At The Harp there’s normally more room in the alleyway at the back of the pub than there is on the pavement at the front, so we’ll probably give that a try.
