108 Wapping High Street, London, E1W 2NE
This pub crawl takes us to a new area for the group, starting at the Captain Kidd, 108 Wapping High Street, E1W 2NE, a Sam Smith’s pub named after a notorious 17th Century pirate who got his comeuppance at nearby Execution Dock. It’s right on the riverside, with some of the best river views of any pub in London from the beer garden, so that’s where we’ll be if the weather’s fine.
The nearest station is Wapping on the London Overground – the exit is at the front of the train heading southbound but nearer the back of the train heading northbound. Unless you’re very physically fit (or hoping to get that way), I would take the lift rather than the stairs. Turn left when you leave the station and you’ll find the pub about 200 yards along Wapping High Street.
For those travelling from Central London, the most obvious connections are at Whitechapel (District and Hammersmith & City lines), for which you want the front of the train, or Canada Water (Jubilee Line), for which you want the back of the train. From East London you will want to be in the back of the train to change at Whitechapel or the front of the train to change at Canada Water.
Please note that as, for most of us, the travelling will be a bit more challenging than normal, I have put up slightly earlier starting and finishing times.
The plan is to move on to the Town of Ramsgate, 62 Wapping High St., E1W 2PN – http://townoframsgate.pub – at around 8.45/9.00. The Town of Ramsgate is, in fact, a lot older than the Captain Kidd which, rather surprisingly, dates back only as far as the 1980s. There is a potted history of the pub in the “Our Story” of the website.
It’s open until midnight and it may be that two pubs will be enough on this occasion, but Turner’s Old Star, 14 Watts St., E1W 2QG – https://www.turnersoldstar.co.uk – is a possibility if we decide we want to go to a third. It was very quiet when I did the original recce but I will visit it again shortly before the event so we know what to expect.
