The Inns of Court, Temple

The Old Bank of England

194 Fleet Street, London, EC4A 2LT

Old Bank 2

This pub crawl takes us to some of the best pubs nestled among the “Inns Of Court”, in London’s original legal district, close to the Royal Courts of Justice at the eastern end of the Strand.

As the name suggests, The Old Bank of England, 194 Fleet Street, EC4A 2LT – – now owned by Hertfordshire brewers McMullen’s, used to be a branch of the Bank of England and the building retains its old grandeur, perhaps somewhat tainted by being located between what were once Sweeney Todd’s barber’s shop and Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop!

The plan is to move on to The Devereux, 20 Devereux Court, WC2R 3JJ – – at 8.45 and then The George, 213 Strand, WC2R 1AP – – at around 10 o’clock.

Depending on how long we stay in the first three pubs, we might have time to visit The Temple Brew House, 46 Essex Street, WC2R 3JF – – a contemporary style micro-brewery tap which, in any event, might suit those who want to stay out a bit later.

The nearest underground station for all of the pubs is Temple (District line*), but Chancery Lane (Central), Covent Garden (Piccadilly) and Holborn (Central & Piccadilly lines) are realistic options. City Thameslink, served by National Rail but with good connections to other services at various points along the Thameslink routes, might work better for some.

As ever, we may need to do things differently on the night, possibly more so than usual as the first two pubs have only just started opening on a Saturday night and this sometimes proves to be a short-lived experiment.
